Greenstone Shopping Centre shares 67 minutes

Greenstone Shopping Centre management partnered with Hamleys SA to answer the call to action to honour our former president the late Nelson Mandela’s life’s work and to try to change the world for the better. The event being a first for the team had three stops; the Edenvale Hospital Paediatric section, Epworth Children’s Village and SPCA Edenvale.

The Hamleys Bears Hattie and Hamley, the Toy Soldier and Rag Doll led by the Ring Master were a hit with both the little patients at the hospital and the little ones at the Epworth Children’s Home. Each child received a colouring book, crayons and cuddly bear from Greenstone management as well as a Hamleys party pack with toys, treats and a balloon. Songs for the kids sung by the group could be heard merrily down the corridors of the children’s ward brightening up the kiddie’s day. The ward is divided into four sections which can take up to 36 little patients of which 27 are toddlers and 9 are neo natal babies.

Groceries and stationery packs were donated for the children at Epworth Children’s Home. The older children were back at school for their first term day however the little ones had a good time singing all their favourite songs and playing with the Hamleys characters. Other ways to get involved would be to come and spend some time with the children in a friendly game of soccer in the park, or help with homework. If you want to get your hands dirty, they have various projects that require attention. The organisation does fundraise and depend on the very generous people to meet the rest of the expenses. Funds are used to take care of the children at Epworth; the home does get a government grant which covers nearly 33% of expenses.

Bags of dog food, cat litter, treats and dog blankets were donated to the SPCA Edenvale by Greenstone, Absolute Pets and Pick n Pay. The Hamleys team were so excited to share treats and play with the animals.  The intake of animals is constant and support is greatly appreciated both practically with food donations and financially.
